Police in the rear view with the lights on…does this make you nervous because you don’t have car insurance?
What car insurance coverage do you need to be legal?
Do you just want to be legal when driving? Ask for Liability or “Liability only.”
In most states it is Liability coverage (Bodily Injury & Property Damage…for damage you might cause to other people and things). Many states also require Uninsured Motorist (provides for a driver to receive damages for injury received from an uninsured, negligent driver when prove it's their fault). If a state requires the Uninsured Motorist, it is still commonly called “Liability Only.” What you need to be legally insured varies by State. For instance, whether you live in Kansas City, KS or Kansas City, MO, the requirements are the same but shared borders don't always mean shared insurance requirements.
As a side note, list all drivers you want covered to drive your car. Often, they cost little to nothing if they’re the same age or older. Important since you, the car owner, can be held responsible for their damages since you let them drive (think avoid lawsuit).
